Yeah dehorning does suck. I remember jacksons.. argh it was so horrible... he wouldnt talk to me for a week. But.. hes all ok now.. and didnt get scurs :) ... Yes.. to dehorn a longhorn would be wrong... but.. if we could have a longhorn with all its attributes minus the horns it would be awesome. If you know what i mean? That awesome colour.. individual conformation, good temperament, all that jazz. *sigh*

I thought they already had polled holstiens.. oh well.. that will be awesome!! Cos in dairys there are soooo many animals and in confined spaces.. there is so much dehorning to be done!

Ya Longhorns deseve to have their horns but others it doesn't matter. But I understand about the public, I wouldn't really be afraid since I love cattle too much to be afraid of horns, but I do watch out for them, like when I go to the petting farm since some of the cows their have theirs, but I am not afraid of them.

I just helped the vet dehorn and castrate 6 calves today including Brian (no I didn't keep anything). We will see how he likes me tomorrow. Fuzz didn't care at all when he was done... and I even gave him shots and stuff.

That's cool! I am sure Brian will still ike you though. Fuzz has such a good personality, that's awesome :D Also cool about working with the vet, are you good friends with your vet?

Do you cut or burn the horns? Ya, I'm impressed you get to help. When I had the group of six that included Cosmo done, the vet more or less in a nice way told me to stay out of the way!

I know I have said this before but mean paopl should not be vets. I would of wanted to be in the room with them while they did that.

We cut the horns.
Umm, yeah, we don't have a 'vet' just a vet clinic and the particular vet who came is good about letting me help. The girl we had before was nice too, but very young and inexperienced.

Yeah you get some good some bad.. the lady who treated jackson when he was infected.. and the time he ate a bunch of grain and had his stomach pumped was the livestock specialist and had no idea! Hated that vet.. only reason i called her was cos i panicked and only had her number.. bawling my eyes out lol. He was fine.. 180 dollars later.. do ya'll remmeber that?

Anyways the lady who dehorned him for me.. she was so wonderful. She had an assistant and stuff but it was really good... we used the caustic wire or whatever it is.. cos he was 6months old.. horns were reasonable size and i didnt like scoop method.. actually i didnt like any method spent months trying to decide! But.. this method i was pretty happy with. He got stitches and stuff it was really good but she was so lovely and kind and nice. she was young too.. but very good. So nice and good to him and to me.. it was great.. id love to be a vet like her.. but im going to be a teacher now soo.. :)

uhm yeah. what cut method do u use?

Well I am not sure what it is called, but it is probably the scoop method.
